From reattaching buttons to full garment creations and more, sewing is a valuable fundamental skill. Learn about techniques and design to start creating your own sewing projects!
Youth who participate in 4-H Sewing programs develop life skills that include leadership, responsibility, sportsmanship, teamwork, community service, a positive attitude, critical thinking, problem solving and a sense of self-worth. Ownership of a sewing machine is not required to participate in the 4-H Sewing project.
Learn about:
- Safety practices for using sewing equipment
- Following a pattern to create a three-dimensional design
- Using a sewing machine
- Modeling your garment
- Choosing fabric and notions
- Learning what fabric to use for different garments
Participant outcomes:
- Members will learn perseverance from the design idea to the final garment.
- Members will learn how to pick a pattern to create a garment that fits their age and body type.
- This project will result in a garment or product the member can wear or share.

- Family Consumer Sciences Teacher
Projects:
- Beginning Sewing Projects
- Stitch by Stitch- Members will learn hand stiches for embellishments, hems and buttons.
- Sew Much Fun-Members will learn the basics of sewing: selecting a pattern, learn sewing equipment, straight seams, hemming, and pressing.
- Sew Much More-Members will learn all of the basics of the sewing machine.
- Intermediate Sewing Projects
- Tailoring-Members will challenge their sewing skills to make a suit coat or jacket.
- Separates-Learn how to extend your wardrobe by creating unique tops and bottoms.
- Advanced Sewing Projects
- Formal Wear- Special occasions and special fabric are spotlighted in this project area.
- Knits-Learn tips and tricks for using knits.
- Create Your Own Project-You can experiment with a new technique, fashion illustration, historical and cultural clothing.
Cloverbud Sewing Opportunities
Youth between 5 and 7 can participate in our 4-H Cloverbud program! This non-competitive program introduces young children to the world of sewing while focusing on safety and fundamentals.
