Frequently asked questions about applying to the Animal Science Graduate Program.

Can Anyone Apply to the Animal Science Graduate Program?

As a minimum, potential applicants must have a baccalaureate degree in Animal Science, Dairy Science, Poultry Science, or another biological science from an accredited institution upon admission to our graduate program with a junior-senior grade-point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 basis). In addition, students trained in Computer Programming, Data Science, or Machine Learning with an interest in precision agriculture can also apply. The student's program must have included courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics. Exceptions to the minimum grade-point average may be made for students with special backgrounds, abilities, or interests.

We consider all applicants for assistantships and typically only accept students into our program for whom we can provide financial support or are recipients of externally funded scholarships.

What is the Deadline for Admission into Your M.S. and Ph.D. Programs?

Applications for admission to the Graduate Program in Animal Science are accepted year-round. However, in order to meet the annual nomination deadline for College of Agricultural Sciences and Graduate School special fellowships and awards, including top-off funds, applications must be completed by mid-December. 

What is the Minimum TOEFL Score for Admission into Our Program?

The language of instruction at Penn State is English. All applicants must satisfy the English language requirements set by the graduate school Policy GCAC-305.  All international applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). 

Regarding the TOEFL, if someone is from an English-speaking Part of a country, such as Canada, must they submit a TOEFL score?

International applicants are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement who have received a baccalaureate or a graduate degree from a college/university/institution located in these countries.

Are GREs Required?

No, the program does not require GRE scores. If you have taken the GRE please submit the scores.

If I was rejected for admission into the graduate program for a certain semester, would it be possible to reapply? If so, What is the First Step to Reapply?

You will need to reapply on the Graduate School online admissions site using the same log in credentials you used the first time and you will need to upload updated application materials.

I am unable to attend classes at University Park. Do you offer any distance learning programs?

We do not offer any distance learning programs. Both our Ph.D. and M.S. programs are research-intensive and require a considerable amount of time in both coursework and laboratory time to fulfill the requirements for the respective degree.
