Club tied for first in annual report of activities; the Dairyman yearbook placed first; Shoshana Brody was named Outstanding Student Member.
The Penn State Dairy Science Club was well represented at the 2020 American Dairy Science Association-Student Affiliate Division (ADSA-SAD) meetings held virtually from June 23-25. During the meetings club members participated in professional development, educational and networking events along with several competitions. Students also had the opportunity to view scientific symposia, oral sessions, and posters presented by professional members of the organization.
In competition results, Penn State tied for first place in the annual report of chapter activities contest. The Dairyman yearbook edited by Kaila Stoltzfus, East Earl, PA; Hanna Welk, Quarryville, PA; and Gregory Norris, Westhampton, MA, also earned first place in its category. In the undergraduate oral presentation contest, George DeMers, York, PA, earned first place in the dairy foods division with his talk, "The Surprising Benefits of Camel Milk." Julia Hamilton, Union City, PA, earned second place in the undergraduate original research poster competition. Penn State also won the award for most undergraduates registered for the virtual meetings. Kelly Forbes, Pittsburgh, PA, played a key role in organizing Penn State's participation in these activities.
During the meetings, Shoshana Brody, Baltimore, MD, completed her term as ADSA-SAD third vice-president and was named the ADSA-SAD Outstanding Student Member. Dr. Chad Dechow was named Outstanding Club Adviser and was elected as incoming first-year adviser for ADSA-SAD. Taylor Wolfe, Milton, PA, was elected 2020-2021 ADSA-SAD secretary-treasurer.
Students earning ADSA certificates for outstanding scholarship included Mikara Anderson, Three Springs, PA; Shoshana Brody; Marie Bryant, Manheim, PA; Belle Dallam, Bel Air, MD; George DeMers; Rebecca Dent, Berwick, PA; Sydney Jewell, Spencer, NY; Austin Kreiser, Elizabethtown, PA; Kelly MacRae, Grove City, PA; Dominic Mattilio, Willow Street, PA; Donald Opp, Eighty Four, PA; Drew Walton, Cochranville, PA; and Andi Wood, Himrod, NY.
The students attended the meetings as members of the American Dairy Science Association Student Affiliate Division (ADSA-SAD). The organization works to develop leadership and promote scholarship among students interested in the dairy industry and encourages students toward careers in dairy science. ADSA was established in 1906 as a scientific and educational association to serve the dairy and dairy-related industries. It facilitates the discovery, application and dissemination of dairy science knowledge and information.
