Penn State Meat Market Will Re-Open in August

Posted: July 27, 2020

The Meat Market will re-open the week of August 24 after receiving approval from the University for the safety plan for customers and employees.

The Department of Animal Science's Meats Laboratory has received approval for its safety plan to reopen their market for in-person sales. Sales will begin the week of August 24, and weekly guidelines will be posted on the Facebook page: Penn State Meat Market.

Restrictions in place in response to Covid-19 will require significant changes in the flow of customers as well as the movement of employees, and safety will be a paramount consideration.

The public sales operating policy will be added to the Department webpage.

Glenn L. Myers, Penn State Meats Lab Manager, said the market is looking forward to welcoming back customers. He also expressed thanks to Dr. Richard Roush, Dr. Steven Loerch and Dr. Terry Etherton for their assistance in moving the request forward to obtain the approval of Penn State Provost Dr. Nicholas P. Jones.

The Penn State Meats Laboratory is located along Porter road from Beaver Stadium on its east side. The 16,000 square foot facility is equipped for conducting livestock slaughter and meat cutting and processing in support of meats teaching, research and extension. Earlier the Meats Lab gave back to the community by donating over 500 pounds of frozen beef and pork leftover from previous meat sales throughout the spring semester to the State College Food Bank.
