Shooting Sports Programs

Excellence is your target.

If you enjoy the outdoors and hunting, you’ll love the shooting sports project! This project covers firearm safety and teaches responsible handling and use. Get ready because this project is hands on. The focus of all 4-H programs is the development of youth as individuals and as responsible and productive citizens. The 4-H Shooting Sports Program stands out as an example. Youth learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms, the principles of hunting and archery, and much more. The activities of the program and the support of caring adult leaders provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, self-worth, and conservation ethics.

The objectives of the 4-H shooting sports program are:

  • To promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior.
  • To expose participants to the broad array of vocational and life-long avocational activities related to shooting sports.
  • To encourage participation in natural resources and related natural science programs by exposing participants to the content through shooting, hunting and related activities.
  • To enhance development of self-concept, character, and personal growth thorough safe educational and socially acceptable involvement in shooting activity.
  • To strengthen families through participation in life-long recreational activities.
  • To complement and enhance the impact of existing safety, shooting and hunter education programs using experiential educational methods and progressive development of skills and abilities.

4-H members have opportunities to test their shooting and sportsmanship skills in county, regional, state, and national competitions. In fact, they could ultimately set Olympic competition as their goal. There are seventeen Olympic shooting sports events, which continue to draw the third-greatest number of countries.
