Best Milking Practices Workshop Focuses on High Quality Production

Workshops designed for English-speaking milkers and managers will emphasize proper milking techniques and standard operating procedures.

Producing high quality milk is fundamental to the success of a dairy operation.  The Penn State Extension Dairy Team is offering this series of hands-on workshops across the state to help managers and milkers understand the importance of consistent milking practices to increase productivity and profitability.

Taught in English, this program will emphasize proper milking techniques and standard operation procedures that will reduce somatic cell count. Practices that promote good udder health include teat cleanliness, udder massage and rapid milking, as well as pre-dipping, fore-stripping, and rapid unit attachment and detachment.

Workshops will be offered on the following dates:

* February 19: Hoss's Steak and Sea House, 18817 Smock Highway, Meadville.

* February 25: Penn State Cooperative Extension Office, 10722 Fairgrounds Road, Suite 6, Huntingdon.

* February 27: Penn State Cooperative Extension Office, 181 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, PA.

* March 1: Country Cupboard Restaurant, 101 Hafer Road, Lewisburg.

* March 5: Shady Maple Smorgasbord, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl.

* March 6: Dutch Way Farm Market Restaurant, 365 Route 41, Gap.

Participants will also learn the importance of early detection of clinical mastitis and tools and tips for monitoring milking performance.

Instructors are Amber Yutzy, Greg Strait, and Andrea Tholen, Penn State Extension educators.

Pennsylvania dairy producers and their dairy employees may attend this workshop for the discounted fee of $17.50, thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. To receive this discount, recipients must be willing to provide their Social Security Number to the Department of Labor and Industry at the workshop. Those unwilling to provide SSN will be charged the full rate of $35. Pennsylvania agribusiness employees are not eligible for this reduced registration fee. A portion of this workshop will be on farm. Bring footwear that can be sanitized, as well as warm and clean clothing. Plastic boots will be provided.
