Penn State Dairy Science Club Named Outstanding Chapter at ADSA

For the fourth consecutive year, Penn State's Dairy Science Club was named Outstanding Chapter at the ADSA Student Affiliate Division Annual Meetings in Utah.

For the fourth consecutive year, Penn State’s Dairy Science Club was named the Outstanding Chapter at the American Dairy Science Association Student Affiliate Division (ADSA-SAD) annual meetings held in Salt Lake City, Utah, from July 18-21.  The award is based on an annual report of chapter activities, participation in the ADSA Student Affiliate Division, club publications and website. 

During the meetings, nine Penn State students toured Bateman’s Mosida Dairy, a 7,000 cow operation that makes excellent use of modern management technologies.  The students also visited Utah Olympic Park in Park City, participated in business meetings, social media training, various competitions, and an awards luncheon.   

Penn State’s quiz bowl team placed first overall in an exciting contest, defeating a team from Cal Poly in the final match.  Team members included Amber Gabel, Newport, PA; Michelle Hartzell, Slippery Rock, PA; Amy Middleton, Mill Hall, PA; and Alton Rudgers, Attica, NY.

The Penn State Dairyman, edited by Caitlyn Pool, Robesonia, PA, placed first in the yearbook category. The club scrapbook assembled by Katelyn Zembrzycki, Uniondale, PA, also placed first.  The club website coordinated by Halee Wasson, State College, PA, earned third place.  The club also earned the Most Miles Traveled award.

Dr. Terry Etherton, Head of the Department of Animal Science, said, “The continued success of the Dairy Science Club at the national level is a well-deserved tribute to their extraordinary hard word throughout the year. It reflects our students’ deep commitment to excellence, and the strong and unwavering support of faculty and staff in helping them achieve this level of achievement. I congratulate the entire club and all the individuals who supported the effort and whose own accomplishments are remarkable.”

In the undergraduate presentation contests, Amber Gabel earned third place in the dairy production division with her talk, “Breeding for Strength May Create Frail Cows.”  Simon Itle, Loretto, PA, placed third in the dairy foods division with, “Ultrasonic Separation of Milk to Select for Fat Globule Size Distribution.”  

Along with Gable, Hartzell, Itle, Middleton, Rudgers, and Wasson, other members attending the meetings and assisting with Penn State's activities included Emma Brenengen, Middletown, MD; Emily Shaw, Williamsburg, PA; and Cara Trotter, Enon Valley, PA. Club co-adviser Dale Olver accompanied the members.

Olver noted, “The interaction with dairy science students and faculty members from other universities is an extremely valuable part of attending these annual meetings. Our students gain insight into opportunities within the dairy industry and make beneficial contacts with industry professionals.”

The students attended the meetings as members of the American Dairy Science Association Student Affiliate Division (ADSA-SAD). The ADSA-SAD is a division of the parent organization that works to develop leadership and promote scholarship among students interested in the dairy industry, and to encourage students toward careers in dairy science. There are more than 600 undergraduate student members in ADSA.

ADSA was established in 1906 as a scientific and educational association to serve the dairy and dairy-related industries. It facilitates the discovery, application and dissemination of dairy science knowledge and information.
