Poultry Science Club Named National Club of the Year

Penn State's Poultry Science Club was recognized as the top club in the country at the 2015 International Poultry and Processing Exposition in Atlanta; Hannah Misner was second in member of the year competition.

Penn State’s Poultry Science Club was recognized as the National Club of the Year at the College Students Program held as part of the 2015 International Poultry and Processing Exposition (IPPE) in Atlanta, GA two weeks ago. The Club also had the Scrapbook of the Year, and Club Member Hannah Misner, Waynesboro, was second in the member of the year competition. Misner is vice-president of the Penn State Club.

Penn State is the only school to place in the top three in all three competitions for the second year in a row. It is the second year in a row that the club took scrapbook honors; members help assemble the scrapbook as part of earning their way to the national competition.

Dr. Terry Etherton, Head of the Department of Animal Science, said, “I am very proud of the remarkable accomplishments of the Poultry Science Club and the national recognition it has received. It is a credit to the club members who work exceedingly hard, and to the faculty members who advise and support them. It is an exceptional honor to do so well on a national level.”

Fifteen club members participated in the College Student Career Program, sponsored by the USPOULTRY Foundation, with over 600 students from 38 universities. This year the College Student Career Program had 119 human resources personnel interviewing students for career opportunities in the poultry industry. Many PSU students returned with multiple job or internships offers.

The career opportunities in the poultry industry are extensive for college graduates. Virtually every “Poultry and Avian Science Minor” from Penn State has been able to find a job in the poultry industry upon graduation.

The College Student Career Program is held in conjunction with the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE), where students visited the extensive trade show with over 1,100 exhibitors covering every aspect of the poultry industry. They were able to observe the latest technology and newest innovations in today’s poultry and egg production and processing industry. This year over 35,000 people attended the exhibition.

Phillip Clauer, senior instructor in the Department of Animal Science, said, “The U.S. Poultry and Egg Association College Student Career program is an outstanding learning experience for our students. Not only do they get a broad overview of the entire industry and related fields while attending the International Production & Processing Expo, they can interact with the human resources managers and recruiters from across the country. These contacts are invaluable as they seek to begin careers.”

Clauer noted that many job offers were made, and there was abundant opportunity for internships. “We could place many more students in the poultry industry each year.” He said this is a great tribute to the quality of the Poultry and Avian Science minor at Penn State and the career opportunities that await students.

Over $40,000 in poultry specific scholarships are available for students, and the Penn State Poultry Science Club and Collegiate Poultry Judging Team are annually one of the best in the country.

Each student who attended the Expo had their expenses paid, having earned the trip through eight hours of work at the Club’s annual Fall Turkey Harvest, working a day for the Penn Ag Food Booth or poultry exhibition area at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, and by completing four pages of the club’s scrapbook.

The club received partial funding from the College of Agricultural Sciences’ Office for Undergraduate Education to participate in this event.
