Penn State Extension Dairy Team to Host Negotiation Workshops

Workshops will focus on learning successful negotiation strategies for positive interactions.

Learning successful negotiation strategies can be invaluable in interactions with vendors, employees and business associates. To help producers build effective negotiating skills, the Penn State Extension Dairy Team will hold a workshop on January 14 at the Bradford County Extension Office, 200 Main Street, Suite 3, Towanda, PA from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Registration is $25 per person, and registration deadline is January 12.

The workshop is based on concepts in the book, Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In. The book may be purchased with registration for $15.

Additional workshops and locations are:

* Wednesday, Jan. 21, Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

* Thursday, Jan. 22, Clubhouse Grill & Restaurant (beside Sheetz), 23 Parkside Court, Mifflintown, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Understanding the principles of negotiation will help producers gain confidence and help them make difficult discussions more productive with family members, employees and others with whom they work. Successfully navigating negotiation opportunities is fundamental to the success of any enterprise.

Participants will have the opportunity to practice techniques in small group discussions, with hands-on experience allowing them to become comfortable with the techniques, and build "negotiation vocabulary."

Program Manager Rebecca Connelly said a session held in the spring was highly productive, with those in attendance giving it high marks for its practical and effective advice. She noted that they became aware of how important it is to understand the other's viewpoint in any given situation.

She added, "Viewing participants in the negotiations or discussions as partners rather than opponents can be extremely helpful in reaching a positive conclusion. It is possible to create a win-win situation through the principles learned in the workshop."
